Embroidery and design placement directions:

The download sample templet is from PrintMaster Platinum but you can use any card program to print your card. Download Template

  1. Hoop 1 to 2 layers of tear away stabilizer and 1 layer organza, satin, linen etc.
  2. Embroider design
  3. Use a mylar template and center the design in the center of the template.  Draw around the outside of the template with a black permanent marker. To make a mylar Template: Draw the oval of the card on the mylar, then measure ½" from all 4 sides, which will create a rectangle.  Now cut on this line to create your template. Using a template prevents you from cutting the fabric to close to the design and allows you a perfect placement.
  4. Use a rotary cutter to cut out design on the black lines you just drew on the fabric.
  5. Tear 1 or both layers of stabilizer away from the fabric.  (If using Organza take both layers off  to give a nice elegant and sheer look which allows  the color of the card show thru as a background for the design.)
  6. Iron the design so it lies flat.
  7. a) If you are printing directly on the card do this now before you place your design in the card following the instructions for printing on a tall or wide card which can be downloaded from the above website for free.  This can be tricky so be sure to follow directions carefully and do a practice printout.
    b) If you are using paper or vellum for the inside of the card then do this before you place your design in the card following the instructions for printing on inside of card also for free as a download from the above web site.( I have a simplified version below 12a)
    c) If you are hand writing a sentiment then go to step 8.
  8. Open the card and lay it flat with the inside of card towards you, with the oval opening over a piece of typing paper to glue on.
  9. Glue around the oval/rectangle opening.  Place the design in the card wrong side towards you, centering the design in the opening and don't be too stingy with the glue. I use Scotch Permanent Glue Sticks (available on my website or at an office supply store).
  10. Finger press the design working from the inside to outside taking out any puckers so the design lies flat in the card.     Glue Section 1 and press it on section 2.
  11. If using a whole sheet of paper or vellum for the sentiment, follow the instructions on my website for ½ fold card. Be sure to let the vellum dry after printing so it doesen't smear. Fold the vellum in ½ centering the sentiment in the card and mark on all 3 edges the edge of the card, then use a paper cutter to cut the edges as necessary.  Place a thin line of glue in along the center right side of the card and place the folded vellum along the fold.
  12. * If you are using ½ sheets of vellum for your card, again follow the instructions from the web site for printing ½ fold card following 12a below.  After printing the vellum and allowing it to dry, cut the sheet in ½ on the 11" side.  Now take the sheet vellum and place the 7" side of the vellum along the right edge of the card and then fold over the front of the card to crease the vellum.  This gives you a 1/2 " tab to glue in next to the fold line on the same section that you placed your design in. Then glue section 1 and press it on section 2. (If you use this method you can get 2 cards out of one sheet of vellum)
    a) Follow the directions for printing on the inside of the card.  Print the sentiment, flip the paper top to bottom  and print on the other end of the paper either the same sentiment for another card or a different sentiment (be sure to let the first pass dry so the ink doesn't smear)  Cut the vellum in ½ on the 11" side.   Place the vellum edge and the edge of the card together and fold over the section 2 to crease the vellum.  This will give you a ½" tab to be glued into the card to hold it as stated in 12 above.
